#71 – Guadalajara Grill – Tap & Pop

During my time in the business world, I made several trips to Guadalajara, Mexico, otherwise known as GDL. I’m sure I will have several other mosaics about those times, but for this one it is about the Guadalajara Grill and how I got “popped” there. If you want to go to THE “party” place in GDL, this is it.

I can’t remember how many times I have been there. Every time we had a “new” person join us on the trip, we always took them to the GDL Grill. One of the traditions is to get the “Special” appetizer platter and insist that the newbie try a particular item on the platter. After they ate it, they tell them that it was bull testicles! Of course, the reaction is different but almost always with shock! When they did that to me, I said, “Can I have another one”? Being a farm boy, that was not the first time I had them.

Another tradition was to get “popped” on your birthday. I had the opportunity to experience that in 1994. When the fellow engineer who told the staff to “pop” me, he told them that because I was deaf to make sure that I knew they were behind him before you pop him. They did that, and as soon as I say them I knew what was happening. 🙃

Getting “Popped” starts out with them putting a napkin around your neck and another, shaped like dog ears on your head. With that complete, a piece of cream pie is shoved in your face, and then your head is pulled back and a jigger of tequila poured down your throat.

Fortunately, the instigator of this task took pictures, so I show you them here.

I think that might have been my last trip to GDL, as a couple of years after the factory was up and fully running, everything was moved to China.

  1. Deaf or not, I would not have reacted the way you did. I’ve never thought such pranks were fun or funny even when I was just an observer and the “victim” thought it hilarious. I guess being at the receiving end of a lot of bullying due to me being seen as different had, and still does affect how I perceive such behaviour.

    1. Thanks for your thoughts, Barry. Being on the Autism spectrum, I can understand how this could be a meltdown thing for you. I guess I had seen it enough on my visits there to come to see it as just a fun prank. It was just part of their partying atmosphere. I am sensitive to several perceptions. Certain tastes, smells and flashing lights set me off. I simply can’t stand mint in any way, and all these annoying ads now strewn across the Internet with all these flashing lights and repetitive motions make me almost want to give up even trying to see the events of the day. I was never “part of the crowd” growing up but was not bullied to any extent, just ignored for the most part. But, I can still understand that causing a reaction in you. It is a spectrum and no two are the same in every respect.

      1. In most web browsers there’s an option to disable animation on most images including advertisements. I simply couldn’t browse the internet if that animation was present.
