#46 – The Story of Firsts…

All of us have plenty of firsts in our lives. It starts out with probably the first time you wet your diaper, and ends with the first (and only) time you will meet your maker. I’m sure I will have many posts here at RJsMosaics about firsts, but I want to use this one to tell you about the year I most likely had more firsts than any other. That year was 1970. Let’s get to it…

I know this is a pretty crude image above, but it is about the only photo I have of my very first car. It was a 1970 Mustang Fastback. The picture was also in front of my first apartment. I think that was the first time in my life that I didn’t have to share a bedroom with someone else. Sleeping by myself seemed kinda strange at first, but I quickly grew to appreciate the solitude.

It wasn’t long after this picture was taken that I had my first very own pet. He was a Dachshund puppy named “Sam”. He was my roommate for 13 years and was the first of many pets in my life. I will have more posts about Sam later, but right now, I want to talk about “my” Mustang. It was my pride and Joy for 3 years before I wore it out. I bought it a day after my college graduation. All I needed to get the loan was my a letter saying I had a job and my diploma.

As I remember, the car cost $2500. Of course, that was the biggest purchase I had ever made. Luckily, I had enough cash to get a tank of gas for the 60-mile trip home. The car got about 10 miles/gallon so that was about $1.50 worth of gas.

I had never had a car before then as all my money went to my college education and a pack a day’s worth of cigarettes.

After graduation, I lived for a month with Dad and my new step-mother, who didn’t really appreciate my presence. My first month’s paycheck was about $800 before taxes and more money than I had ever seen before. I think I have used up my allotment of the word “first”, so I better close out this post.

    1. I don’t really remember much about the details, but it was a spur of the moment type thing. That was the first and last Ford product I would ever own. From then on, it was Chevys. My current and likely last car is a 2012 Chevy Sonic. I think it is my favorite. It, like a VW fits me like a glove.
