#103 – My Pride & Joy…

When I retired at the age of 54 after thirty years in a corporate world and moved back to Indiana, I was considering two options. To get another IT job at a college in the area, or opening up my own business in making custom furniture. I chose the second option, and I’m glad I did.

Woodworking had been a life-long passion, but I never thought it as a business. Up until then, I had several woodworking shops. One I even had custom built on the back of the garage. It was my dream shop for the two years I used it. I designed in from scratch. But, the shop I built in an old pole barn, as shown above, at our post-retirement home was serious stuff.

I made and sold wooden toys at regional craft fairs to get my furniture business. A part of the craft fair tent were pictures of custom furniture I built. This combination of craft fairs to custom furniture orders ended up bringing in the majority of my business. It was fun, but after six years and hundreds of jobs, I like so many things before got bored with it and went into the full retirement mode.
